Gallery 3: A Closer Look
If the mustangs don't spook immediately, there is a good chance they will let a photographer get close enough for portrait shots. In fact, some are curious and will often approach if they have nothing to fear. Wild mustangs are constantly aware of a human's presence, but once they feel comfortable, the big challenge is to get them to look up from feeding.

Mares keep close watch on their foals. Stallions keep an eye on their mares and younger challengers watch for any opportunity to entice a mare away from her current band.

Foals can be playful and inquisitive. At an early age, the colts begin their playful battles with other colts. Mare's coats are often clean and unmarked, while stallion's coats are mared with numberous bite marks and scars.
